ABSTAIN,  to refrain from.  (F.,—L.)   M.E. absteynen; Wyclif, I Tim. iv. 3.   The sb. abstinence occurs in the Ancren Riwle, p. 340.—O.F. abstener (Roquefort); cf. mod. F. abstenir.—Lat. abstinere, to abstain.—Lat. abs, from; and tenere, to hold.  Cf. Skt. tan, to stretch.—TAN, to stretch.   See Tenable.   Der. abstin-ent, abstin-ence, from Lat. abstin-ere; and abstens-ion, from the pp. abstens-us.
