ADOPT,
to choose or take to oneself. (L.) Adopt occurs in
Hall, Hen. VII, an. 7. The sb. adopcioun is in Wyclif,
Romans, c. 8; and in the Ayenbite of Inwyt, pp. 101, 104, 146.—Lat. adoptare,
to adopt, choose.—Lat. ad, to; and optare, to wish.—✔AP,
