ADVOCATE,  one called on to plead.  (Lat.)   'Be myn aduócat in that heyè place;' Chaucer, Sec. Nun's Ta., Group G, 68.—Lat. aduocatus, a common forensic term for a pleader, advocate, one 'called to' the bar.   Lat. ad, to; uocatus, called, pp. of uocare, to call.   See Voice.   Der. advocate, verb; advocate-ship; advocac-y (F. advocat-ie, which see in Cotgrave); also advowee, advowson, which see. ADDENDA

Perhaps not (L.), but (F.,—L.).   Cf. O.F. advocat, 'an advocate;' Cot.—L. aduocatus, &c.
