Origin of the word AFTERWARD, AFTERWARDS.
Etymology of the word AFTERWARD, AFTERWARDS.

From An Etymology Dictionary of the English Language, by Walter W. Skeat, 1893

AFTERWARD, AFTERWARDS,  subsequently.  (E.)   M.E. afterward, Ormulum, 14793; efter-ward, Ayenbite of Inwyt, p. 24.   The adverbial suffix -s (originally a gen. sing. suffix) was added at a later time.   Shakespeare has both forms, but I do not find that afterwards is much earlier than his time.—A.S. æfterweard, adj. behind.   Grein, i. 55.—A.S. æfter, behind; and weard, answering to E. -ward, towards.   See After and Towards.
