AGISTMENT,  the pasturage of cattle by agreement.  (F.,L.)   See Halliwell; Blount gives a reference for the word, anno 6 Hen. I., vol. iii. 231; agistement in the same, iii. 23; and agistours, pl. in the Statutes of the Realm, vol. i. p. 161, an. 1311.   The sbs. are from the vb. agister, lit. to assign a resting-place or lodgingF. a (Lat. ad), to; and O.F. giste, 'a bed, couch, lodging, place to lie on or to rest in,' Cotgrave.   This O.F. giste = mod.
