Etymology Dictionary

Origin of the word ALKALI.  Etymology of the word ALKALI.

From An Etymology Dictionary of the English Language, by Walter W. Skeat, 1893

ALKALI,  a salt.  (Arabic.)   Chaucer has alkaly, C. T. Group G, 810.—Arabic al qalí; whre al is the def. article, and qalí is the name given to the ashes of the plant glass-wort (Salicornia), which abounds in soda.   By some, qalí is derived from the Ar. verb qalay, to fry (Rich. Dict. p. 1146); Palmer's Pers. Dict. gives 'qalí, alkali,' and 'qalíyah, a fricassee, curry;' col. 474.   Others make qalí the name of the plant itself.   Der. alkali-ne, alkal-escent, alkal-oid, alkali-fy.
