ALLY,   to bind together.  (F.,—L.)   M.E. alien, with one l.   'Alied to the emperor;' Rob. of Glouc. p. 65.   [The sb. aliance, alliance, occurs at p. 89.   It is spelt alliaunce in Gower, C. A. i. 199.]—O.F. alier, to bind to.—O.F. a, to; and lier, to bind.—Lat. ad; and ligare, to bind.   See Ligament.   Der. ally, sb., one bound, pl. allies; alli-ance.   From the same root, allig-ation, q.v.
