ANECDOTE,
a story in private life. (F.,—Gk.) Used by Sterne, Serm.
5. Note in early use.—F. anecdote, not in Cotgrave.—Gk.
ἀνέκδοτος, unpublished; so that our word means properly 'an unpublished story,'
'a piece of gossip among friends.'—Gk.
ἀν- (E. un-); and
ἔκδοτος, given
out.—Gk.
ἐκ, out, and
δίδωμι, I give; from the same root as E.
