ANNIVERSARY,
the annual commemoration of an event. (Lat.) Fabyan, an. 1369,
speaks of 'an annyuersarye yerely to be kept.' The pl. anniuersaries
occurs in the Ancren Riwle, p. 22. It is properly an adjective, and
so used by Bp. Hall, On the Obser. of Christ's Nativity, where he speaks of an 'anniversary
memorial.'—Lat. anniuersarius, returning yearly.—Lat. anni-,
for anno-, stem of annus, a year; and uertere, to turn, pp.
uersus. See Annals,
and Verse.
