Etymology Dictionary

Origin of the word ANOMALY.  Etymology of the word ANOMALY.

From An Etymology Dictionary of the English Language, by Walter W. Skeat, 1893.

ANOMALY,  deviation from rule.  (Gk.)   Used by Sir T. Browne, Vulg. Errors, b. iii. c. 15. § 5.   Cotgrave's French Dict. gives only the adj. anomal, inequal; so that the sb. was probably taken from Lat. anomalia, or directly from the Gk.—Gk. ἀνωμαλία, irregularity, unevenness.—Gk.. ἀνώμαλος, uneven.—Gk. ἀνα-, full form of the negative prefix (see Curtius), and ὁμαλός, even; the ω resulting from coalescence of α and ο.   The Gk. ὁμαλός is formed by suffix -αλ- from ὁμ-, stem of ὁμός, one and the same, joint, common; closely related to E. same.   See Same.   Der. anomal-ous.
