Etymology Dictionary

Origin of the word ANTINOMIAN.  Etymology of the word ANTINOMIAN.

From An Etymology Dictionary of the English Language, by Walter W. Skeat, 1893.

ANTINOMIAN,  one who denies the obligation of moral law.  (Gk.)   Tillotson, vol. ii. ser. 50, speaks of 'the Antinomian doctrine.'  Milton, Doctrine and Discipline of Divorce, b. ii. c. 3, uses the sb. antinomie.   The suffix -an is adjectival, from Lat. -anus.   The word is not from Gk. ἀντινομία, an ambiguity in the law, but is simply coined from Gk. ἀντί, against, and νόμος, law, which is from the verb νέμειν, to deal out, also to pasture.   See Anti-, and Nomad.
