ANUS, the
lower orifice of the bowels. (Lat.) In Kersey's Dict.
Borrowed from Lat. anus. Both Fick (i. 504) and Curtius (i.
472) give the derivation from the ✔AS,
to sit, which would account for the long a by the loss of s.
Cf. Skt. ás, to sit; Gk.
ἧσ-ται, he sits.
