APOCALYPSE, a
revelation. (Gk.) A name given to the last book of the
Bible. M.E. apocalips, used by Wyclif.—Lat.
apocalypsis, Rev. i. 1 (Vulgate version).—Gk.
ἀποκάλυψις, Rev. i. 1; lit. 'an uncovering.'—Gk.
ἀποκαλύπτειν, to uncover.—Gk.
ἀπό, off (cognate with E.
off); and
καλύπτειν, to cover. Cf. Gk.
καλύβη, a hut, cabin, cell, cover; which is perhaps allied to Lat.
clupeus, clypeus, a shield; Fick, ii. 72. Der. apocalyp-t-ic,
