APOCOPE, a
cutting off of a letter or syllable at the end of a word.
(Gk.) A grammatical term; Lat. apocopè, borrowed from Gk.
ἀποκοπή, a cutting
off.—Gk.
ἀπό, off (Apo-); and
κόπτειν, to hew,
cut.—✔SKAP,
to cut, hew; Curtius, i. 187; Fick, i. 807. Capon, q.v., is from the
