APOPLEXY, a
sudden deprivation of motion by a shock to the system. (Low L.,—Gk.)
Chaucer, near the beginning of The Nun's Priest's Tale, has the form poplexye;
like his potecarie for apothecary.—Low Lat. apoplexia,
also spelt poplexia; see the latter in Ducange.—Gk.
ἀποπληξία,
stupor, apoplexy.—Gk.
ἀποπλήσσειν, to cripple by a stroke.—Gk.
ἀπό,
off (see Apo-); and πλήσσειν, to strike. See
Plague.
