APOSTASY, APOSTACY, a
desertion of one's principles or line of conduct. (F.,—Gk.)
In rather early use. M.E. apostasie, Wyclif's Works, ii. 51.—F.
apostasie, 'an apostasie;' Cot.—Low Lat. apostasia; Ducange.—Gk.
ἀποστασία, a later form of
ἀπό-στασις, a defection, revolt, lit. 'a standing
away from.'—Gk.
ἀπό, off, from (see Apo-); and
στάσις, a standing.—Gk.
ἔστην, I placed myself,
ἵστημι, I place, set; words from the same root as E.
