BALDRIC, BALDRICK,
a girdle, belt. (F.,—O.H.G.)
M.E. baudric, bawdrik, Chaucer, Prol. 116; bawderyke,
Prompt. Parv. p. 27. But a form baldric must have co-existed;
Shak. has baldrick, Much Ado, i. I. 244.—O.F.
baldric*, a form which must have preceded the forms baldret, baldrei,
given by Burguy; cf. Low Lat. baldringus in Ducange.—O.H.G.
balderich, a girdle; (not given by Wackernagel, but cited in Webster, E.
Müller, Koch, and others;) formed with suffixes -er and -ik, from O.H.G.
balz, palz, a belt, allied to E. belt. See Belt.
