BARN,
a place for storing grain. (E.) M.E. berne, Chaucer, C.
T. 12997.—A.S.
bern, Luke, iii. 17; a contracted form of ber-ern, which occurs in
the Old Northumbrian version of the same passage; thus the Lindisfarne MS.
glosses Lat. 'aream' by 'ber-ern vel bere-flor.' A compound
word; from A.S. bere, barley, and ern, a house or place for
storing, which enters into many other compounds; see Grein, i. 228.
