BARREN,
sterile. (F.) M.E. barein, Chaucer, C. T. 1977; barain,
Ancren Riwle, p. 158.—O.F. baraigne, brehaigne (F. brehaigne),
barren. ¶
Etym. unknown; the usual guess is, from Breton brec’han, sterile; but
there is little to shew that this is a true Celtic word, or that the spelling
brehaigne is older than baraigne.
