BASENET, BASNET,  a light helmet.  (F.)   M.E. basenet, Spenser, F. Q. vi. 1. 31.—O.F. bacinet, a helmet; so called because formed like a small basin.—O.F. bacin, a basin, with dim. suffix -et.   See Basin.

ADDENDA

BASNET, BASSENET, BASSINET,  a kind a light helmet.  (F.,—C.)   Spelt bassenet in Halliwell, who gives several examples.   M.E. basinet, Rich. Cuer de Lion, 403; bacynet, id. 5266. —O.F. bacinet (Burguy, Roquefort); spelt bassinet in Cot., who explains it by 'a small bason, also a head-peece.'   Dimin. of O.F. bacin, a basin; see Basin.
