BATHOS,
lit. depth. (Gk.) Ludicrously applied to a descent from the
elevated to the mean in poetry or oratory. See the allusion, in
Appendix I to Pope's Dunciad, to A Treatise of the Bathos, or the Art of
Sinking in Poetry.—Gk.
βάθος, depth; cf. Gk.
