BEAGLE,
a small dog, for hunting hares. (Unknown.) M.E. begele;
Hall's Chron. Hen. VI, an. 27. Of unknown origin. The
index to Cotgrave has 'Beagle, petite chienne.' Cf. 'Begle,
canicula;' Levins, 53, 43. ¶
It has been suggested that it is connected with Gael. beag, little; of
which there is no proof whatever. [†]

begle, Squire of Low Degree, 771. It is printed as bogelle
in Wright's Voc. i. 251, col. 1, which looks like a mistake for begelle.
