CADE,
a barrel or cask. (L.) 'A cade of
herrings;' 2 Hen. VI, iv. 2. 36. 'Cade of
herynge, or othyr lyke, cada, lacista;' Prompt. Parv.
p. 57.—Lat. cadus,
a barrel, wine-vessel, cask. + Gk. κάδος, a pail, jar, cask,
wine-vessel. + Russian kade, a cask. Origin unknown;
'the derivation from the root χαδ,
χανδάνω, is one of the
hallucinations that deface our dictionaries;' Curtius, i. 169.
