CALLOUS,
hard, indurated. (F.,—L.)
Callous occurs in Holland's Pliny, bk. xvi. c. 31; and callosity
in the same, bk. xvi. c. 7.—F.
calleux, 'hard, or thick-skinned, by much labouring;' Cot.—Lat.
callosus, hard, or thick-skinned, callous.—Lat.
callus, callum, hard skin; callere, to have a
hard skin. Der. callos-ity (from Lat. acc. callositatem,
hardness of skin); also callous-ly, callous-ness.
