CAMERA,
a box, chamber, &c. (L.) Chiefly used as an
abbreviation of Lat. camera obscura, i.e. dark chamber, the
name of what was once an optical toy, but now of great service in
photography. See Chamber,
of which it is the orig. form. Der. camerated,
from a Lat. form cameratus, formed into chambers; a term in
architecture.
