CANCER,   a crab, a corroding tumour.  (L.)   The tumour was named from the notion of 'eating' into the flesh.   Cancer occurs as the name of a zodiacal sign in Chaucer, Merchant's Tale, l. 644.—Lat. cancer, a crab; gen. cancri. + Gk. καρκίνος, a crab. + Skt. karkata, karkataka, a crab; also the sign Cancer of the zodiac.   β. so named from its hard shell; cf. Skt. karkara, hard.   Der. cancer-ous, cancri-form, cancer-ate, cancer-at-ion; and see Canker, Careen.
