CANDIDATE,
one who offers himself to be elected to an office.
(L.) Shak. has: 'Be candidatus then and put
it on;' Titus, i. 185; where the allusion is to the white robe
worn by a candidate for office among the Romans.—Lat. candidatus,
white-robed; a candidate for an office.—Lat. candidus,
white. See Candid.
