CANDLE,
a kind of artificial light. (L.) In very early
use. A.S. candel, a candle, Grein, i. 155.—Lat.
candela, a candle, taper.—Lat. candēre, to glow.—Lat.
canděre*, to set on fire; see further under Candid. Der.
Candle-mas, with which cf. Christ-mas, q.v.;
candle-stick (Trevisa,
