CANVASS, to
discuss, solicit votes. (F.,—L.,—Gk.)
In Shak. 'to take to task;' 1 Hen. VI, i. 3. 36. Merely
derived from the sb. canvas, the orig. meaning being 'to sift
through canvas.' Similarly, Cotgrave explains the O.F. canabasser
by 'to canvas, or curiously to examine, search or sift out
the depth of a matter.' See Canvas.
