prefix, (1) from Lat. prep. de, down, from, away; also
(2) occurring in French words, being the O.F. des-, F. dé-
in composition; in which case it = Lat. dis-. 'It is
negative and oppositive in destroy, desuetude, deform,
&c. It is intensitive in declare, desolate,
desiccate, &c.;' Morris, Hist. Outlines of Eng. Accidence; sect.
