DANDELION,
the name of a flower. (F.,—L.) The word
occurs in Cotgrave. The older spelling dent-de-lyon
occurs in G. Douglas, Prol. to xii Book of Ænid, l. 119; see Skeat,
Specimens of English.—F. dent de lion, 'the herbe dandelyon.'
[Cf. Span. diente de leon, dandelion.] β. The E. word is
merely taken from the French; the plant is named from its jagged
leaves, the edges of which present rows of teeth.—Lat. dentem,
acc. of dens, a tooth; de, preposition; and leonem, acc. of
leo, a
