DUKE,
a leader. (F.,—L.) M. E. duc, duk; Layamon, l. 86.—O.
F. duc.—Lat. ducem, accus. of dux, a leader (crude
form duci).—Lat. ducere, to lead; cognate with E. tug,
q.v.—✔DUK,
to pull, draw; Fick, i. 624. Der. duke-dom; and see duc-al,
duch-ess, duch-y, duc-at, doge. From the same source we have ad-duce,
con-duce, de-duce, in-duce, &c.; also duct, con-duct, de-duct,
in-duct, &c.
