Origin and Etymology of the word EDIFY.

EDIFY,  to build up, instruct.  (F.,—L.)   In Shak. Tw. Nt. v. 298.—O.F. edifier, 'to edifie, build;' Cot.—Lat. ædificare, to build.—Lat. ædi-, crude form of ædes, a building; and -fic-, for fac-ere, to make.   β. The Lat. ædes orig. meant 'a fire-place,' or 'hearth;' cf. Irish aidhe, a house, aodh, fire.—IDH, to kindle; Skt. indh, to kindle.   For Lat. facere, see Fact.   Der. edify-ing, edific-at-ion; edifice, from F. edifice, 'an edifice' (Cotgrave), which from Lat. ædificium, a building; edile, from Lat. ædilis, a magistrate who had the care of public buildings; edile-ship.
