EITHER,
one of two. (E.) M.E. either, eyther, aither,
ayther; Chaucer, C. T. 1645.—A.S. ǽgþer, Matt. ix.
17; a contracted form of ǽghwæþer, Grein, i. 65.
Compounded of á + ge + hwæþer; where
á = aye, ever, ge is a common
prefix, and hwæþer is E. whether; March, A.S. Gram. sect. 136. +
Du. ieder. + O.H.G. éowedar, M.H.G. ieweder, G.
jeder.
