FARTHER, FARTHEST,
more far, most far. (E.) In Shak. Ant. and Cleop. ii. 1. 31;
iii. 2. 26. These forms are due to a mistake, and to confusion with further,
furthest; see Further.
Not found at all early; the M.E. forms are fer, ferre, ferrer, and ferrest.
'Than walkede I ferrer;' P. Plowman's Crede, 207; 'The ferrest in
his parisch;' Chaucer, C. T. 496. The th crept into the word
in course of time.
