GAMBLE,
to play for money. (E.) Comparatively a modern
word. It occurs in Cowper, Tirocinium, 246. Formed, by
suffix -le (which has a frequentative force), from the verb to game,
the b being merely excrescent; so that gamble = gamm-le.
This form, gamm-le or gam-le, has taken the place of the M.E. gamenien
or gamenen, to play at games, to gamble, which occurs in King Alisaunder,
ed. Weber, 5461.—A.S. gamenian, to play at a game, in the Liber
Scintillarum (unprinted); Bosworth.—A.S. gamen, a game. See Game.
