GARISH, GAIRISH,
glaring, staring, showy. (Scand.) 'The garish sun;'
Romeo, iii. 2. 25. 'Day's garish eye;' Milton, Il Penseroso,
141. From the verb to gare. Chaucer uses the
slightly different form gauren, to stare; C. T. 5332, 14375. β. By the frequent change of
s to r, we see that gare, to stare, is a variant of
M.E. gasen, to gaze. (For an example of the change, see Frore.)
