HANDICRAFT,
manual occupation, by way of trade. (E.) Cotgrave translates
O.F. mestier by 'a trade, occupation, mystery, handicraft.'
A corruption of handcraft; the insertion of the i being due to an
imitation of the form of handiwork, in which i is a real part of
the word.—A.S. handcræft, a trade; Canons under K. Edgar, sect. xi; in
Thorpe's Ancient Laws, ii. 246. See Hand and
Craft. Der.
