IGUANA,
a kind of American lizard. (Span.,—W. Indian) 'The iguana'
is described in a translation of Buffon's Nat. Hist., London, 1792, vol. ii.
263. Also called guana.—Span. iguana.
β. 'Cuvier states, on the authority of Hernandes and Scaliger, that it was
originally a St. Domingo word, where it was pronounced by the natives hiuana or
igoana;' Beeton's Dict. of Universal Information. Littré gives
yuana
as a Caribbean word, cited by Oviedo in 1525. [†]
