Etymology Dictionary

Origin and Etymology of the word JEHOVAH.

From An Etymology Dictionary of the English Language, by Walter W. Skeat, 1893

JEHOVAH,  the chief Hebrew name of the Deity.  (Heb.)   In Exod. vi. 3.—Heb. yahóváh, or more correctly yahaveh; see the article on Jehovah in the Concise Dict. of the Bible.   The etymology is uncertain, but it is perhaps from the root háváh, to be, to exist; and, if so, the sense is 'the self-existent.' [†]

ADDENDA

This form is due to the divine name being pointed, in the Heb. scriptures, with the vowels of another word.  The original pronunciation was yahveh, the etymology of which is entirely unknown.—A.L.M.
