Origin and Etymology of the word KHEDIVE.

From An Etymology Dictionary of the English Language, by Walter W. Skeat, 1893

KHEDIVE,  a prince.  (F.,—Pers.)   A Turkish title given to the governor of Egypt; the word itself is, however, not Turkish, but borrowed from Persian.—F. Khédive.—Pers. khadíw, khidíw, khudíw, a king, a great prince, a sovereign, Rich. Dict. p. 601; spelt khidív, a king, Palmer's Dict. col. 216, where the name for the viceroy of Egypt is given as khidéwé.   Cf. Pers. khodá, God (Vullers, p. 663).
