MALTREAT,
to treat ill. (F.,—L.) 'Yorick indeed was never better
served in his life; but it was a little hard to maltreat him after;'
Sterne, Tristram Shandy, vol. ii. c. 17, not far from the end.—F. maltraiter,
to treat ill. Cf. Ital. maltrattare, to treat ill.—Lat.
male, adv., ill, badly; and tractare, to treat,
handle. See Malice and Treat.
Der. maltreat-ment = O.F. maltraictement, 'hard dealing;' Cot.
