MAMALUKE, MAMELUKE,
an Egyptian light horse-soldier. (F.,—Arab.) In Sir T.
More, Works, p. 279 f. Also in Skelton, Why Come Ye Nat to Courte,
l. 476; see Spec. of Eng. ed. Skeat, p. 143, and the note.—F. Mamaluc,
'a Mameluke, or light-horseman;' Cot. Cf. Span. Mameluco,
Ital. Mammalucco. They were a corps of slaves.—Arab. mamlúk,
a purchased slave or captive; lit. 'possessed.'—Arab. root malaka, he
possessed; Rich. Dict. pp. 1494, 1488.
