Origin and Etymology of the word NAVEL.

NAVEL,  the central point of the belly.  (E.)   Merely the dimin. of nave (1).   We find nave used for navel, Macb. i. 2. 22; and conversely nauels (= navels) for the naves of a wheel, Bible, ed. 1551, 3 Kings, vii. 33.   M.E. nauel (= navel), Chaucer, C. T. 1959.—A.S. nafela, Ælfred, tr. of Orosius, b. iv. c. 1. § 3. + Du. navel, from naaf, a nave. + Icel. nafli, from nöf. + Dan. navle, from nav. + Swed. nafle, from naf. + G. nabel, from nabe.   Cf. Skt. nábhi, navel, nave, centre.   See Nave (1).
