NECTAR,
a delicious beverage. (L.,—Gk.) In Spenser, Sonnet 39,
l. 13.—Lat. nectar.—Gk.
νέκταρ, the drink of the gods; Homer,
Il. xix. 38, Od. v. 93. Root unknown. Der. nectar-e-an,
nectar-e-ous, nectar-ous, nectar-y; also nectar-ine, the name given to a variety
of the peach, orig. an adj., as in 'Nectarine fruits,' Milton, P. L. iv. 332.
