Origin of the word NEIF, NEAF.  Etymology of the word NEIF, NEAF.

From An Etymology Dictionary of the English Language, by Walter W. Skeat, 1893

NEIF, NEAF,  the fist.  (Scand.)   In Shak. Mids. Nt. Dr. iv. 1. 20; 2 Hen. IV, ii. 4. 200.   M.E. neue (= neve, dat. case), Havelok, 2405.—Icel. hnefi, the fist; Swed. näfve; Dan. næve.   The sense is the closed hand, with 'bent' fingers; as explained by the allied Gk. form κνάμπτειν, γνάμπτειν, to crook, bend, γναμπτός, bent, curved.   These are nasalised forms from κάμπτειν, to bend.
