OBEDIENT,  submissive, dutiful.  (F.,—L.)   In early use.  M. E. obedient, Ancren Riwle, p. 424, l. 11.—O. F. obedient, 'obedient;' Cot.—Lat. obedient-, stem of pres. pt. of obedire, to obey.   β. The old Lat. form was oboedire.—Lat. ob-, prefix (of little force); and audire, to hear, listen to.   See Ob- and Audience.   Der. obedient-ly, obedience, O. Eng. Homilies, ed. Morris, i. 213, l. 5 from bottom, = O. F. obedience, Lat. obedientia.   And see obeisance, obey.
