OBSCURE,  dark, little known.  (F.,—L.)   'Now is faire, and now obscure;' Rom. of the Rose, 5351.—F. obscur, 'obscure,' Cot.—Lat. obscurus, dark, lit. 'covered over.'—Lat. ob, over; and -scurus, covered, from SKU, to cover.   Cf. Skt. sku, to cover; and see Sky.   Der. obscure-ly, -ness; obscure, verb, used by Surrey to translate Lat. caligare in Virgil, Æn. ii. 606; obscur-i-ty, from F. obscurité, 'obscurity' (Cot.), from Lat. acc. obscuritatem; also obscur-at-ion, directly from Lat. obscuratio.
