M.E. ocean, Chaucer, C. T. 4925 (not 9425).—O.F.
ocean, fem. oceane; Cot. gives 'la mer oceane, the ocean,
or maine sea.'—Lat.
oceanum, acc. of oceanus, the main sea.—Gk.
ὠκεανός, the great stream supposed to encompass the earth, Homer, Il. xiv. 245,
xx. 7; a word of unknown origin. Der. ocean-ic.
