PANEGYRIC,
a eulogy, encomium. (L.,—Gk.)
Spelt panegyricke in Minsheu, ed. 1627.—Lat.
panegyricus, a eulogy; from panegyricus, adj., with the same sense
as in Greek.—Gk. πανηγυρικός,
fit for a full assembly, festive, solemn; hence applied to a festival oration,
or panegyric.—Gk.
πᾶν,
neut.
of
πᾶς, all; and
ἄγυρι-ς, Æolic form of
ἀγορά, a gathering, a crowd, related to
ἀγείρειν, to assemble. See
